Shower with Sliding DoorsUnless your home is brand new, chances are you have at least one bathroom that is in need of a remodel. With so many types, styles, and colors of tile, it’s difficult to know where to start. We are showcasing our latest bathroom projects featuring designed and installed. Hopefully, these photos will provide some inspiration and help you find a look for your remodel project!

Most homes have a hallway bathroom that features a shower over a tub. A bathtub is a great feature for bathing kids, pets, and maybe even enjoying a relaxing soak on a rare occasion. Tiling above a tub is necessary to protect the walls from water and you are typically working above a white or off-white bathtub.

SHOWER TILE IDEAS

In the master bathroom, many homeowners are opting to remove their bathtub and replace it with a large shower.  Showers are more practical for most people. Plus, a large walk-in shower with a bench, grab bar and removeable showerhead are perfect for homeowners who are aging in place.

As for shower tile designs, neutral colors are still the most popular. White, grey, and beige are the most requested tile. While the color patterns are simple, we can add interest through texture, pattern, and color combinations.

For this project the blue and white is off-set with light gray walls. the Subway pattern is featured on the bathroom floors, while the shower and accent wall have large tiles.  The pedestal sink makes the space feel open and storage is provided with a wall cabinet.

TEXTURED SHOWER TILE

A modern, streamlined look is possible without being boring. Another way to add character to a tiled shower is to use tile with some texture. Tile with an irregular surface is becoming more popular.  Ceramic and porcelain tile is manufactured with both uniform and irregularly “shaped” surfaces which can appear to be molded. For a more masculine look, stone-look tile adds authenticity with a rough, raw surface. This tile is also great for shower floors to help prevent slipping.

LARGE FORMAT TILE

Large format tile is another trend we’ve been installing in our customer’s bathrooms. These large format tiles give a sleek, modern look. They can be used on shower walls and bathroom floors for a consistent appearance. Large format tiles are typically porcelain which is low maintenance and durable. The limited grout lines make cleaning a breeze.

BATHROOM FLOOR TILE IDEAS

Various wood-look tile continues to be very popular for bathroom tile floors. Of course, these faux wood tiles are actually made of porcelain so the floor is watertight. These wood-look tiles vary from very rustic looking, to more modern with just a hint of a hardwood appearance. To make these floor tiles a little more unique, playing with the layout of the tile is an idea. In the last photo, we laid these tiles  in a subway tile pattern  in the powder room area.

Will any plumbing or electrical need to be moved?

If the layout is remaining the same and no plumbing or electrical is being re-routed, this will be the best for the budget. However, if you are looking to do any of the following, costs will increase…

  • Move location of shower / bathtub drain
  • Move location of or add lighting fixtures
  • Move location of or add electrical outlets or switches

The main word to focus on is “location”. If lighting fixtures or plumbing fixtures are simply being swapped out but remaining in the same location the cost will be less expensive. However, if you are looking to move the location of any of the items listed above to a new location your costs will increase. Depending on the scope of work being complete, the costs to complete the above items could range from as little as $500 to over $5,000.

What types of material are to be used?

An entire book could be written on this question but to keep it simple we will focus on the major material costs that go into a bathroom remodel…

  • Vanity: A new vanity with top will range in price from $1000-$3,000. On average, our customers spend $1,250 for a bathroom vanity.
  • Tile: Per square foot, tile will range from $3 to $20. On average, our customers spend $8 per square foot. This would be for floors and / or showers. A less expensive alternative to tile flooring is luxury vinyl plank, which costs $4-5 per square foot on average.
  • Tile vs fiberglass tub/ shower surround: Tile showers can be the star of the show for your bathroom remodel. However, they can also greatly increase costs. Some of this cost is within the material itself but the labor required is also much higher for a tile shower. Fiberglass tub / shower combinations can be purchased for as little as $800 while the material and labor for a tile shower and tile floor can be $4000+.
  • Glass shower doors: A standard glass shower door can be picked up at your local home store for around $400-500. Once you get into custom showers a standard glass door from the home store likely will not work. In these scenarios, a glass company is called in to custom size the glass and door. The custom glass shower door can range in price from $1,250-2,800.
  • Plumbing fixtures: The basic vanity faucet starts at $50 while our customers normally spend about $225 on a vanity faucet. For tub and shower fixtures, the prices start at $125 but can easily exceed $500. Our customers normally spend $275.

How long does it take to complete a bathroom remodel?

Most basic bathroom remodels can be completed in within two weeks. As we begin getting into bathrooms with tile floors and showers, the timeframe can extend to 3-6 weeks. On average, our bathroom remodels take 3 weeks.

Do you see yourself being in the house for the considerable future?

  • If so, you will want to make the bathroom fit you and your lifestyle. You may want to spend more to get the features you’re looking for and not worry as much about making up the cost in re-sale value.
  • If not, you will want to look at the latest trends to complete your bathroom remodel and keep costs in check. We would not suggest going over the top, buying the fanciest materials, as you likely will not make up the entire cost when selling the house if you do this.

Do you use the bathroom every day?

  • If so, we typically encourage you to get the most out of your bathroom! Obviously don’t go wildly beyond your budget, but there are many features and functions you can add to your space that will enhance your experience without breaking the bank.
  • If you don’t plan on using this bathroom every day, you may want to consider sticking with the basics.

Are you willing to do maintenance?

  • If so, it is important to keep in mind which features and materials require maintenance over time. Tile showers are a great example of this as they can require things like touching up the caulking as well as cleaning the grout from time to time.
  • If not, it might be best to consider low maintenance options. Maybe instead of a tile shower, you could go with a sold, more durable material like acrylic.

Renovating any part of the home is not an easy feat. It must involve lots of planning to avoid regrettable mistakes. The annoying thing is you can make mistakes whether or not you plan. But you can’t compare the mistakes you make without a plan to those you make with a plan. To help you stay on the safe side with your bathroom renovation here are 7 common mistakes pointed out along with how to avoid them.

  1. Going in without a budget

No matter how much you have, it’s never right to embark on any project without a budget. It only leads to spending too much money and getting little value for it. Before anything begins to visit stores with the images of the kind of materials, space, and other things you need for the renovation to get a decent estimate. Of course, make provision for extra money worth at least 10% of your original budget.

Bathroom Renovation

  1. Choosing the wrong sink or bathtub

We all have that dream tub or sink that we can’t or shouldn’t try to force into our bathrooms. Don’t try this at all. Some people end up with a sink or tub that’s too large, not fitting, and/or not functional for their bathroom space.

  1. Neglecting proper ventilation

The bathroom is always a moist environment and an attraction for microorganisms. Add that to a lack of ventilation to air out space and you have peeling paint, growing mold, an entire country’s worth of microorganisms. Keep your new bathroom safe, clean, and long-lasting by ensuring proper ventilation during the remodeling process. Don’t leave out a reasonably sized window.

  1. Not committing to a theme

A renovating process makes you feel you can have anything, and that is exciting. But you shouldn’t take it so literally. Check your options from images online or in magazines and choose. Choose a theme, choose a look, décor, or idea. It saves stress and hastens your project.

  1. Trying to DIY it

Many homeowners probably believe they can even DIY building a house – they DIY everything else already. A bathroom renovation like many other projects should never be DIY. You need to hire licensed and experienced professionals for the whole project and not some parts. It will save you costs and stress in the long-run. Not to mention professionals have better finishing.

  1. Not planning for that possible contingency

Contingencies almost always occur. They can be mild or pretty serious and without any plan for them, they can greatly influence your project in the wrong way. It’s possible to discover that the upgrades are more serious than predicted. So be prepared to go with a plan B on everything.

  1. Rushing the project

Rushing the bathroom renovation might help your bathroom come together faster. But it also sets you up for other problems. A renovation or remodeling project takes time for the contractors to work through. Don’t rush them into taking shortcuts or using untested methods.
